Chronic Pain Q & A

What is chronic pain?

Pain is a normal part of human life, and the complex network of nerves that send messages between body and brain is necessary. Pain signals tell you when something is pressing against your skin or when you’ve eaten something that might be dangerous to your health.

Acute pain occurs at the time of an injury. While acute pain can be severe, it usually resolves once the underlying condition is treated.

Chronic pain is different; it lasts three months or more. Chronic pain isn’t always easy to diagnose or treat, and many people limit their daily activities due to chronic pain.

Some people live with continuous chronic pain. The pain comes and goes for others but never remains gone for long. Both experiences are stressful and affect your ability to live a full and active lifestyle.

How is chronic pain diagnosed?

Many things can cause chronic pain. In some cases, the condition arises due to a medical problem like cancer or arthritis. There’s no apparent cause of chronic pain in other instances, even though the pain is very real for the patient.

When you come to Bluegrass Bone & Joint for a diagnostic assessment, the process begins with a conversation about your symptoms, lifestyle, and health history. A quick physical exam follows, and your practitioner uses the information to narrow down the source of your pain.

A problem with the nerves that transmit pain signals is a common cause of chronic pain. Chronic systemic inflammation can also be to blame. Some chronic pain is brought on by degenerative joint conditions or the lingering effects of an infection.

Once your provider determines the source of your pain, they can customize a treatment plan to suit your needs and goals.

What are some treatment options for chronic pain?

Medication might play a role in managing chronic pain. While drug therapy is sometimes the best available option, every effort is made to find a treatment that relieves pain without the risk of side effects, such as addiction.

Joint injections are an outstanding way to manage pain. Epidural steroid injections deliver  corticosteroid medication into the area surrounding your spinal nerves. This can reduce pain brought on by irritated or inflamed spinal nerve roots.

Nerve blocks are another option for improving chronic pain. These anesthetic injections are delivered near the source of pain and are also used in diagnosing chronic pain. Trigger point injections are used to release knotted muscle tissue.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) uses controlled electrical currents to interrupt the transmission of pain signals between the body and brain. There are external devices that use electrodes to transmit the current and other options that use implanted devices.
